West Ham United 1 Tottenham Hotspur 0 - Football League Division One

West Ham United Football Club are based in Upton Park, Newham, East London and have played their home matches at the 35,647 capacity
Boleyn Ground stadium since 1904. The clubs formative roots stretch back to their formation as a professional side in 1900 by, but existed for at least five years prior to this under the name Thames Ironworks F.C. who themselves were built upon the remains of Old Castle Swifts F.C. (a club formed in 1892).

This was my first away match as a Spurs supporter. I travelled by train and tube to Upton Park (District Line). Your 14-year-old correspondent accompanied by a Hammers fan stood in the home North Bank. Now I was very used to standing in large football crowds but this was the first time that I had done so where everyone else was shouting for the other team. I took an instant dislike to the majority of these people for numerous reasons, most of which I can not recall. On reflection the real issue was that they appeared to hate my team! By the same token I was not about to include them on my Christmas card list.

A tense closely fought encounter was settled by the only goal scored for the Hammers by Keith Robson (left). However, a few months later I returned to this venue for a League Cup 4th Round Replay. In a match interrupted by a lengthy floodlight failure and prolonged by extra time, Spurs ran out winners courtesy of goals from John Duncan and Willie Young.
